Lawrence has been my home airport for years. I like it.
It is a fairly busy, towered Class D field that sees an interesting mix of private, corporate and training aircraft, with MedFlite and State Police helicopters also running around. So it’s fun.
Be aware that Taxiway Delta was removed in the summer of 2023, so you might want to take a look at a taxi diagram before visiting. If you are landing on 23, there’s a chance you will be asked to back-taxi on Runway 23 while someone else is on final. It works, but leaving Delta in place would have worked better. Oh well. The powers-that-be got rid of an angled taxiway but made kind of a hash of flow as a result.
The restaurant at Lawrence is Dominic’s Diner. It is open pretty much every day, so chances are excellent they will be there for you when you fly in. The restaurant is in the terminal, which is also home to Angel Flight; you can taxi right up and go in in.
Dominic’s has a nice waiting area, which you might get to use on weekend mornings.
There is a counter as well as indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating is fenced, and is a favorite spot for young families to come and eat while the kids run around.
That’e me on the left with my friend Dan. We’re outside on the patio, staring at our phones like a couple of dorky teenagers.
The food at Dominic’s is reliably good. From egg dishes and pancakes to scrambles and homemade corned beef hash, you are all set for breakfast. Gino, the owner, and Sam, his sister, are Lebanese, so the menu includes some Middle Eastern choices, too. At lunch you can get a burger and fries, or various salads, which are all good, or chicken schwarma and falafel if you are a bit more adventurous. It rounds out to a no-miss menu no matter what you might want. You can’t go wrong at Dominic’s, so give it a try!
